Reflecting on a positive book review – Private Power Public Purpose – Adventures in Business, Politics and the Arts
A friend was speaking admiringly of a fellow Ottawa resident, Hattie Klotz, and asked if I knew her. I responded with gusto in the affirmative remarking on her achievements as a writer and skiing enthusiast not to mention her knowledge and love of gardens. I remember with gratitude the attached article she authored in 2023 sparked by the publication of my book “Private Power Public Purpose – Adventures in Business, Politics and the Arts”. Defeating the Trump Threat – A Winning Canada Strategy – Notes for remarks to the Rockcliffe Park Speakers Series
Notes for remarks to the Rockcliffe Park Speakers Series March 26, 2025 By Thomas d’Aquino Donald Trump has declared an unjustified economic war against our country and has repeatedly expressed his desire to annex Canada as the 51st state. Canadians have responded with defiance and a surge of patriotism unmatched since World War II. The Canadian response has also been sensible: we have endeavoured to persuade Trump and his Administration to retreat from the tariff war he seeks to impose on America’s closest ally and friend; we have argued that the tariffs will destroy jobs and investment on both sides of the border; we have said clearly that proposed annexation is a pipe dream and that he should cease and desist his insulting and inflammatory language. We have taken measures to strengthen our shared borders and aggressively counter the small quantities of fentanyl that cross into the United States […]
DEFEATING THE TRUMP THREAT – A WINNING CANADA STRATEGY – By Thomas d’Aquino
Summary of my key points before the Progressive Senate Group at the Senate of Canada By Thomas d’Aquino Tuesday, March 11, 2025 Donald Trump has declared economic war on Canada and has repeatedly called for our country to become the 51st state. Canada: Far From Broken But Dangerously Complacent
Excerpt from an address to the Harvard Club of Ottawa, January 30, 2024 The final chapter “Reaching for Gold” in my recent book “Private Power Public Purpose” challenges Canadians to capitalize on our country’s many unparalleled advantages and aspire to make Canada “the best country in the world in which to live, work, invest and grow”. In no-holds-barred language, I discuss the major challenges we face including assaults on political civility and Canadian identity, and the problems in the domains of immigration, the economy, energy, the environment, healthcare, foreign policy and defence, and Canada – United States relations. I conclude that with bold leadership matched with good public policy we can resolve our problems and that only complacency stands in our way.
