Targeting Prosperity: A Budget that Delivers

May 2, 2006

Comments on the 2006 Federal Budget by Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives:

“The 2006 Federal Budget delivers on all fronts. It brings Canadians meaningful tax cuts with suggestions of more to come. It brings runaway spending under control. New spending is concentrated on critical areas such as skills development, border infrastructure and security, and is focused on delivering better value for money. It takes action to reduce the federal debt faster than anyone expected.”

“The Canadian Council of Chief Executives especially welcomes the budget’s commitment to developing a comprehensive, results-focused competitiveness agenda.  We look forward to working closely with the government over the next year to shape a business environment that will inspire Canadian enterprises from coast to coast to ‘go for the gold’ in global markets and will ensure growing prosperity and well-being for all Canadians over the next generation.”

“The budget also makes clear the need for the federal and provincial governments to collaborate in making Canada’s federation work better.  They must sort out responsibilities for spending and taxation, strengthen Canada’s economic union and bring down the overall corporate tax burden to help Canadian communities compete globally for investment and jobs.”
