CCCE Expresses Condolences on the Passing of R. John Lawrence

The Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) today expressed its bereavement at the loss of longtime member R. John Lawrence. “Jack Lawrence will be deeply missed by friends and colleagues alike,” said Thomas d’Aquino, the CCCE’s Chief Executive and President. “Beyond his contributions as an influential member of Canada’s business community, his passion for good public policy was one of his most notable characteristics. He was a champion of Canadian competitiveness and fought tirelessly for responsible fiscal policy. In addition, he was a generous supporter of academic excellence. My colleagues from across the country join me in extending our condolences to the Lawrence family in the face of this tragic loss.” The CCCE is a non-partisan organization composed of 150 chief executives and entrepreneurs heading Canada’s leading enterprises.  CCCE members lead companies that collectively administer $4.5 trillion in assets and have annual revenues of more than $850 billion. In addition […]

Letter to Canada’s Premiers and Territorial Leaders Urging Negotiations to Restore Business Opportunities for Canadian Manufacturers

The following letter was delivered today to Canada’s premiers and territorial leaders:   Dear Premier:   We want to thank you for your leadership and that of your Government in backing negotiations with the United States to secure a waiver from Buy American restrictions for Canadian manufactured goods and expand access to government procurement markets on both sides of the border.   In May, we wrote to Premiers to express our concern that Canadian companies were being excluded from state and local procurement markets as a result of Buy American restrictions appearing in recent US legislation.  Since then the issue has become more acute and more urgent for manufacturers that count on access to US sub-national procurement markets to sustain production facilities and jobs across Canada.   Canada’s manufacturers continue to lose business and shed jobs as a result of the Buy American provisions contained in the American Recovery and […]

Business Leaders Congratulate Premier Gordon Campbell for Strengthening British Columbia’s Competitiveness

British Columbia’s decision to harmonize its provincial sales tax (PST) with the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) is absolutely the right strategy for these difficult times and will help to create new jobs as Canada emerges from recession, says Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). “Canada’s business leaders congratulate Premier Gordon Campbell for his leadership and vision,” Mr. d’Aquino said.  “In a single, bold stroke, his government will strengthen British Columbia’s competitiveness, attract new investment and improve employment opportunities for workers throughout the province.” The CCCE has been a strong advocate of sales tax harmonization since the GST went into effect in 1991.  The conversion of a traditional retail sales tax to a value-added tax benefits the economy by encouraging companies to invest in new equipment, by lowering the costs of business inputs, and by reducing the cost of compliance and administration. Those […]

Preparing Now for the Labour Needs of Tomorrow

We’ve got a big problem in this country.  I’m not talking about the hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost in our manufacturing sector.  I’m not talking about a $50 billion federal deficit this year.  I’m not talking about the impact of Buy American on our exporters, or the fact you now need a passport to go cross-border shopping.   Don’t get me wrong.  Canada-United States relations, deficits and recession are all serious issues with very real consequences. But I am more worried about what happens next; about what happens after this recession ends; about how we will keep our economy growing when we have only two people in the labour force for every three jobs that need doing.   For now, of course, governments are back to focusing on the standard three priorities in any recession: jobs, jobs, jobs. There’s nothing wrong with that in the short term.  People […]

Remarks by Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President, Canadian Council of Chief Executives to The National Summit, Detroit

Co-chairs William Clay Ford, Jr., Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ford Motor Company, and Andrew Liveris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company, fellow panelists, ladies and gentlemen. It is a privilege to participate in this historic National Summit here at Ford Field convened by the highly respected Detroit Economic Club.  I value enormously this opportunity to offer some thoughts on America’s competitiveness in the face of a profound global transformation that has left no country and no individual untouched. A debate about America’s economic future cannot help but include your neighbour from just across the river, Canada.  As you exchange ideas at this Summit about how to achieve leaps forward in technology, energy, environment and manufacturing, the Canadian dimension should not be far away in your thinking.  Here’s why. Our two economies are the most highly integrated in the world.  […]

Roadmap to Fiscal Balance and Strategy to Improve Competitiveness Both Crucial to Recovery, CCCE Says

Canada’s governments need to develop clear and credible plans for restoring fiscal balance as quickly as possible as the current recession eases, says Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of theCanadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). Finance ministers from the G8 leading industrialized countries are meeting today and tomorrow in Lecce, Italy, and are expected to discuss exit strategies from the measures governments around the world have taken to deal with the global economic crisis. These measures have sharply increased government spending, leading to huge budget deficits in many countries. The danger is that much higher levels of public debt could lead to higher inflation and borrowing costs, which in turn would damage prospects for job creation and a return to sustainable growth. “Canada’s federal government, in close collaboration with its provincial counterparts, has implemented a range of stimulus measures that are helping workers and their families to weather the severe […]

CCCE Endorses Canada-United States Procurement Negotiations

Business leaders across the country today strongly congratulated Canada’s premiers for their joint commitment to extending Canada-United States free trade to provincial, state and municipal levels. “At a time when Buy American provisions in the United States are hurting businesses and workers on both sides of the border, we need to explore every possible means of encouraging the free flow of goods and services among our communities,” said Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). The CCCE is Canada’s most influential business association, composed of 150 chief executives and leading entrepreneurs from all major sectors and regions of the country. In a letter to the premiers on June 1, the CCCE and other business groups recommended that all levels of government cooperate in pursuing an ambitious bilateral procurement agreement that would safeguard jobs in both countries. “We are gratified that Prime Minister Stephen Harper, International […]
