Fiscal Prudence and Sound Economic Policies Must Be Top Priorities of Canada’s New Parliament, Business Leaders Say

Canada’s most influential business organization, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), said this morning that fiscal prudence and sound economic policies must be the top priorities of Canada’s new parliament. This message was accompanied by a six-page memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Paul Martin and the three other leaders of the major political parties. “Canada’s economic record of the past decade has been the envy of the world,” says Thomas d’Aquino, the CCCE’s President and Chief Executive. “Strong economic growth, low inflation, robust job creation and steadily improving productivity have generated back-to-back federal surpluses and ever-rising tax revenues. These in turn have financed improvements in healthcare, social spending, defence and security.” The London-based magazine The Economist recently referred to Canada as “an unfinished masterpiece,” Mr. d’Aquino noted. “Irresponsible spending and policies that would hurt investment and entrepreneurship will guarantee that the masterpiece will not be finished,” he said. He added that Canadians of all walks […]

European Union Expansion – An Interview with Thomas d’Aquino, CCCE President and Chief Executive

On May 1, 2004, the European Union was expanded from 15 to 25 countries.  Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia have joined the union.  To mark this historic occasion, Thomas d’Aquino answered questions on the expanded European Union from the perspective of the Canadian business community. 1. Why is expansion of the European Union important? The expansion of the European Union is extraordinarily important from several perspectives but in particular from an historical perspective.  Of the ten new members, eight are former communist states.  Adding these members has reunited two halves of a continent that was split during the Cold War. Ultimately, expansion serves as a further indicator of Europe’s willingness to promote stable democratic institutions, market-based economic conditions and competition within a union of countries. The accession of these ten countries is a remarkable achievement that will bring huge political benefits in the […]

Building a Strong Bilateral Partnership

Prime Minister Paul Martin’s meetings in Washington over the next two days with United States President George W. Bush and senior Congressional leaders come at an important time in the bilateral agenda. Canada’s business leaders are not expecting the Prime Minister’s visit to produce miracles in resolving trade disputes in the short term. We do, however, hope they will reinforce American confidence in Canada as a respected partner in North America and lay the foundation that will be necessary if Canada chooses in future to advance bold new ideas for taking our bilateral partnership to new heights. The members of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives met for two days in Washington last week, and talked with senior decision-makers such as Andrew Card, chief of staff to the President, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and General John Gordon, Homeland Security advisor to the President, as well as a wide range of […]

Business Leaders Support National Security Policy

The following are comments by Thomas d’Aquino, President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, on the national security strategy announced today by the federal government: “Canada’s business leaders have long argued that economic and physical security go hand in hand, and the war on terrorism is a battle to preserve both democratic values and the open markets that are essential to the prosperity of Canadians.  The national security policy unveiled today by Prime Minister Paul Martin represents an important step forward in meeting this challenge. “The security strategy reassures Canadians of the integrity of our own borders, increases Canada’s credibility as an effective partner in the defence of North America and promises to reinvigorate our country’s ability to contribute to peace and security worldwide. “Many of the measures announced today are consistent with the recommendations of the discussion paper released by the Council earlier this month, New Frontiers: […]
