Canada Needs a New Round of Tax Cuts
The Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) has strongly endorsed the Canada-Mexico Partnership (CMP) signed today by Prime Minister Paul Martin and Mexican President Vicente Fox. At a lunch for the President and Prime Minister concluding a four-day retreat of Canadian and Mexican business leaders, the CCCE pledged to participate fully in the new public-private sector forum to be established by the partnership accord. “To succeed in global markets, Canada must reinforce both its own competitive advantages and those of North America as a whole,” said Thomas d’Aquino, CCCE President and Chief Executive. “The Canada-Mexico Partnership strengthens the strategic relationship between our two countries and will help to forge a more robust and dynamic North American economy.” The CCCE, composed of the chief executives of 150 leading Canadian enterprises, has agreed to work with its Mexican counterpart, the Consejo Mexicano de Hombres de Negocios, to ensure effective business support in realizing […]
It’s an honour to share with the Canadian Club today my views about energy and our economy. With high natural gas prices and oil breaking through the $55 per barrel mark, today’s session is very timely. I realize that with these high commodity prices – and of course high pump prices – you might be looking at today’s luncheon as a good opportunity to get out the tar and feathers. I would caution against that. Tar is a petroleum product. It too is at record high prices. Tar aside, I won’t deny that high prices are feathering the nests of energy companies in the short term – but just like consumers who feel the pinch at the pump, the leaders of Canada’s energy industry are also concerned with the high cost of oil and gas and the volatility it causes for both their customers and investors. High energy prices are […]
The Council on Foreign Relations (www.cfr.org) today announced the launch of an independent, trinational task force on the future of North America. Thomas d’Aquino, President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) will serve as one of three vice-chairs of the task force. Following is the announcement by the Council on Foreign Relations: Council Joins Leading Canadians and Mexicans to Launch Independent Task Force on the Future of North America October 15, 2004—The Council has launched an independent task force on the future of North America to examine regional integration since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement ten years ago. The task force will identify inadequacies in the current arrangements and suggest opportunities for deeper cooperation on areas of common interest. Unlike other Council-sponsored task forces, which focus primarily on U.S. policy, this initiative includes participants from Canada and Mexico, as well as […]
The CCCE, which is composed of the chief executives of 150 leading Canadian enterprises, believes that a single regulator ultimately is the only approach that can deliver on the provinces’ stated goal of inspiring investor confidence and supporting competitiveness, innovation and growth through efficient, streamlined and cost-effective regulation. “It is critical for provincial governments to recognize this passport agreement as a beginning and not as an end,” said Gwyn Morgan, Vice-Chairman of the CCCE and President and Chief Executive Officer of Alberta-based EnCana Corporation. Mr. Morgan urged provincial ministers to keep working together to develop a united Canadian solution that would maximize the competitive position of Canadian companies. “EnCana, like many other Canadian companies, must be able to attract investors in Canada, the United States and globally on a level playing field with our United States competitors. Being subject to regulation on both sides of the border is enough of […]
Canada’s business leaders today praised the recommendations of the External Advisory Committee on Smart Regulation and urged the federal government to move forward quickly with a comprehensive plan to reform Canada’s regulatory processes. “To compete and win internationally, Canada requires a regulatory structure that is simpler, faster, more transparent and more predictable. The committee has provided the government with a superb blueprint, laying out clear and sensible recommendations that deserve prompt action. The needs are pressing and the benefits are obvious,” said Thomas d’Aquino, President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). “Smart regulation improves the protection of people and the environment while enabling companies to move faster in making investments and creating jobs. It is good for the economy and good for communities. Perhaps most important at a time of rising demand for public services such as health care, smarter regulation would make a real difference in […]
Canada and Mexico – Building a Shared Future in North America
Canada’s business leaders today urged the federal government to show leadership in multilateral trade negotiations now underway in Geneva. This morning, the Chair of the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council circulated a revised draft text to all 147 WTO members. The draft text, which sets out a proposed framework for more talks to liberalize world trade, includes measures to curtail agricultural export subsidies, make substantial reductions in trade-distorting domestic support, and increase market access for products and services. “An agreement on an agricultural framework is the key to unlocking progress on the broader multilateral agenda, and the current text is one that Canada should be willing to work with,” said Thomas d’Aquino, President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). “To play a meaningful role in these talks, Canada must demonstrate that it is ready to discuss all issues, even those that elicit protests from certain special […]
Quebec-based members of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) will host a dinner for Florida Governor Jeb Bush and members of his Team Florida trade mission in Montreal this evening. The CCCE is composed of the chief executives of 150 leading Canadian corporations, and members from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Atlantic Canada also will attend. Canada is Florida’s number one source of in-bound tourism, its largest source of foreign investment and its second-largest trading partner after Brazil. Quebec alone is a more important business partner for Florida than major countries such as Spain, France or Italy, with two-way trade of $1.9 billion last year, not counting an estimated half a billion dollars that Quebec tourists spend in the state each year. “The huge flows of tourism, trade and investment that connect Quebec and Florida demonstrate why it is so important for Canada and the United States to take the […]

The new Cabinet points to a government that can be expected to proceed constructively in building on Canada’s economic strengths while maintaining stability and exercising sound fiscal management.” “We look forward to working with Prime Minister Martin and his new team in pursuing the Council’s priorities in the areas of spending review and reallocation, tax policy, health care, the environment, regulatory reform, parliamentary reform, Canada-United States relations and Canada’s global influence and competitiveness.”
