Ivey-Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership Presented by Dominic Barton
Dominic Barton, Global Managing Partner, McKinsey & Company, presents the Ivey – Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership – “In the Arena – Leadership in an Age of Disruption”. I was privileged to have Dominic Barton present the 2017 Ivey lecture in my name. Barton draws on many years of experience in working with leaders in business, government and the voluntary sector worldwide. I strongly commend this text, recently published by Ivey, to leaders and to those who aspire to lead. His address was presented as well to the Ivey student body at Western University. *The 2018 Ivey-Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership will be presented by The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, the longest serving Chief Justice of Canada in history (2000-2017).

Fly Fishing with “Harry” and President George H.W. Bush
Reflections from the Adlatok River in supernatural Northern Labrador. My visit to the Adlatok River, nestled in the austerely spectacular landscape of Northern Labrador, revived warm memories of events past and camaraderie never forgotten. Sitting in the comfort of Camp Adlatok, overlooking beautiful saltwater Adlatok Bay, and following a hearty lunch, our fishing party of four drank a toast to our generous friend and host, Harry Steele. My fishing partner, Bob Foster, and I, also reminisced about our departed comrade and builder of Camp Adlatok, the legendary Craig Dobbin. Thanks to Harry, over the decades I had come to know and fish some of the finest salmon rivers in the world – the Adlatok, Eagle, Hunt, Lewis, North, Tom Luscombe’s Brook, and Sandhill. The morning on the Adlatok had been productive – the fish were rising, six salmon and a number of grilse were taken and all but several […]
Essentials of leadership
At a recent meeting with students at the Ivey Business School at Western University, I reflected on some of the attributes of good leadership that I have observed over a lifetime of working in the worlds of business, government and the voluntary sector. Six attributes top my list: ambition, integrity, knowledge, vision, empowering others and excellence. Ambition is where it all begins…the desire to create, to build, to achieve. Ambition is often inspired by dreams and by the belief that with hard work and good luck, dreams can become reality. Ambition is what overcomes fear of failure and what drives those who fail to try and try again. Adversity can drive ambition. Many of Canada’s leading entrepreneurs have been been stunning achievers despite – or perhaps because of – the fact that they were born into families and situations without privilege. Ambition should be recognized and celebrated for what it is: the life force […]
