Seize Opportunities in Asia Pacific Markets, Canadian Business Leader Urges at APEC Summit

Canada needs to boost its presence in the Asia Pacific region if Canadians are to capitalize on the enormous opportunities that the region offers, says Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE). “A profoundly important shift in economic and political power towards the Pacific and Asia is well underway,” Mr. d’Aquino told an audience in Sydney today. “This reality must reshape the Canadian consciousness as well as the public policies and business strategies of my country.” Mr. d’Aquino was in Australia at the invitation of Prime Minister John Howard to attend the APEC Business Summit.  The first APEC CEO Summit, which took place in Vancouver in 1997, was hosted by the CCCE and co-chaired by Mr. d’Aquino. Speakers at this year’s summit included Prime Minister Stephen Harper, President Hu Jintao of China and President George W. Bush of the United States. “Canadians are significant players in the […]

Too Much, or Not Enough? The Montebello Summit in Perspective

(The following article, slightly abbreviated, appears in the August 29, 2007, issue of the National Post) By Thomas d’Aquino Reality, the writer Salman Rushdie once observed, is a question of perspective. The truth of his statement is clear in the divergent reactions of various interest groups to the 2007 North American Leaders’ Summit in Montebello, Quebec. In Canada, agitators on the far left of the political spectrum claim to have seen a nefarious conspiracy to weaken health and safety regulations, export bulk water to the United States and sign away our sovereignty. In the United States, it is the far right that is promoting similar paranoid theories, accusing the leaders of planning a massive new NAFTA Superhighway as a prelude to merging Canada, the United States and Mexico into one big “North American Union”. Yet while fringe critics on both the right and the left complain of secret plans to […]

Promoting a Better Understanding of the SPP

The following article appears today in the current issue of FOCAL POINT, the newsletter of the Canadian Foundation for the Americas. The author, Thomas d’Aquino, is Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, and chairs the Secretariat advising Canadian members of the North American Competitiveness Council.   Is This NAFTA All Over Again? Promoting a Better Understanding of the SPP  By Thomas d’Aquino   By any measure, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has been an extraordinary success. Since it went into effect in 1994, trade between Canada, the United States and Mexico has flourished, employment across the continent has risen and family incomes have marched steadily upward. Contrast those results with the alarmist predictions made by Canada’s nationalist left during the run-up to NAFTA’s ratification. Critics claimed that more liberalized trade with our southern neighbours would savage Canada’s economy, destroy cherished social programs and […]

Canadian Council of Chief Executives Salutes the Memory of Former Chairman Rowland C. Frazee

Thomas d’Aquino, the Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), paid tribute today to the life and memory of Rowland Frazee, a distinguished Canadian business leader and former Chairman of the CCCE’s predecessor organization, the Business Council on National Issues (BCNI). In saluting a departed friend, Mr. d’Aquino said, “Rowland Frazee was an exemplary Canadian:  a patriot who served his country in war; a business leader who shepherded Canada’s largest financial institution, the Royal Bank of Canada, through turbulent times; and a humanist who was among the first to embrace the idea of corporate social responsibility.” “The Canadian Council of Chief Executives is a particular beneficiary of Rowland Frazee’s commitment,” said Mr. d’Aquino.  “He played a leading role in the 1980s in building the organization and in helping to shape policies that contributed greatly to Canada’s evolution as an important economic player in the world.  Most notably, he was […]

Business Leaders Host King Abdullah II of Jordan, Welcome Efforts to Build Closer Bilateral Ties

Canada’s business leaders today congratulated the governments of Canada and Jordan for their commitment to forging closer bilateral commercial ties, an effort that should both improve prospects for economic growth in the Middle Eastern nation and offer significant investment opportunities for Canadian companies. “Under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, Jordan has made impressive strides in modernizing its economy, opening its markets and promoting the well-being of its people,” said Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), which represents 150 leading Canadian companies and entrepreneurs. “As Canadians and as business leaders, we strongly endorse this agenda and look forward to enhanced economic relations between our two countries. We also endorse His Majesty’s tireless efforts to promote peace, reconciliation and economic development in the region.” Mr. d’Aquino was speaking in advance of a special luncheon and business leaders’ roundtable in the presence of King […]

Business Leaders Welcome Canada-India Investment Agreement, Discuss Next Steps in Building Stronger Bilateral Ties

Business leaders from Canada and India today congratulated their respective governments on reaching a Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPA), a major step forward in promoting stronger trade and investment ties between the two countries. “This agreement provides a solid platform on which to build a closer and more productive partnership between Canada and India,” said Thomas d’Aquino, Chief Executive and President of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE).  He was speaking in advance of the second Canada-India CEO Roundtable, which takes place later today in Montreal. Organized by the CCCE and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Roundtable brings together business leaders from the two countries to discuss ways to build a more robust bilateral commercial relationship.  The first Canada-India CEO Roundtable was held in Delhi in March 2007, during a CCCE-led mission of Canadian business leaders to India. Among the recommendations emerging from the first Roundtable was […]
